Need

In southwest Ohio, our population is aging as the health care workforce is shrinking. Greentree Health Science Academy seeks to reverse that trend by “growing our own” health care professionals to meet the increasing need.

High Demand for Health Care Workers

  • A study by the Ohio Hospital Association indicates that the average age of nurses in Ohio is 47, and that within the next 10 years, 40% are expected to retire.
  • Ohio will reach an overall shortfall of 32,000 registered nurses by 2020 (a 29% shortage) according to the Health Resources Services Administration.
  • The U.S. Department of Labor Statistics reports that at the national level, seven of the 20 fastest growing occupations are health care-related. Health care will generate more wage and salary jobs between 2006 and 2016 than any other industry. In Ohio, health occupations will account for 23 percent of net job growth.

More Employers in Southwest Ohio

As Cincinnati grows to the north and Dayton grows to the south, hospitals and other health care providers are locating new facilities in this region — and they need skilled employees.

  • Atrium Medical Center, a Greentree founding partner, operates a 250-bed medical center on a 190-acre campus in Middletown, opened in 2007. The campus also includes Dayton Children’s Specialty Care Center, the Bidwell Surgery Center and Avalon by Otterbein, an innovative skilled nursing care and rehabilitation facility.
  • Cincinnati Children’s Liberty Campus opened in 2008 and West Chester Medical Center opened in 2009
  • Also in the area are Miami Valley Hospital, Mercy Hospital Fairfield, Bethesda Medical Center at Arrow Springs, Butler County Medical Center and numerous nursing homes, physician offices and other health care providers.
Dayton and Cincinnati hospitals are among the largest of all employers in the region. Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton offers many Greentree students hands-on health care experiences.
