Nursing

Nursing is a career with a bright future. Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 23 percent from 2006 to 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations. Growth is being driven by technological advances in patient care, an increasing emphasis on preventive care, and a rapid increase in the number of older people, who are much more likely to need nursing care. Nurses use skills that blend scientific knowledge with compassion and caring. They are in great demand for work in hospitals, home health care services, nursing care facilities, physicians’ offices and other health care providers and agencies.

Miami University Regionals offer a variety of programs for those interested in entering the nursing profession and for nurses who want to enhance their job opportunities by advancing their education.

Associate Degree in Nursing
This two-year curriculum (70 semester hours) provides courses in liberal arts, sciences and nursing. Nursing courses carefully balance theory-based classroom activities with hands-on clinical experience. Graduates of the Associate Degree in Nursing program are qualified to take the State Board of Nursing Licensing examination (NCLEX), which must be passed to practice as a registered nurse (RN). Students who complete this degree at Miami have the option of continuing their nursing education in the RN-to-BSN completion program. For more information, visit the websites of Sinclair Community College and Cincinnati State Technical College.

LPN to Associate Degree in Nursing
This track through the Associate Degree in Nursing Program recognizes the prior learning of the Licensed Practical Nurse. Upon completing prerequisite courses, the LPN can complete the Associate Degree in Applied Science in Nursing in 12 months. For more information, visit Cincinnati State Technical College’s website.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing image
This program provides a balance of liberal arts and professional nursing courses. Emphasis is on the nursing process for health promotion, prevention, restoration and maintenance with clients, family and client groups in community health settings. Students are involved in activities to prepare them for leadership and management roles and graduate study. Clinical experiences are one day a week during the second semester of the sophomore year and two days a week during the junior and senior years. Graduates are qualified to take the National Council Licensing Examination – RN (NCLEX-RN) to become an RN (registered nurse) in Ohio or any other state. RN-to-BSN Completion Program
The RN-to-BSN degree program is designed for registered nurses. Full-time RN-BSN students can earn their degree in two years. Many RN-BSN students attend part-time, allowing them to work around family and professional responsibilities. The program emphasizes the nurse's role for health promotion, prevention, restoration and maintenance with clients, family and client groups in community health settings. RN-BSN graduates accept positions in nursing management, government and military installations, community health, wellness centers, or assume more responsibility and independence in their existing practice roles.
